2022 Lim JJ, Sequeira IR, Yip W, Lu LW, Barnett D, Cameron-Smith D, Poppitt SD Postprandial glycine as a biomarker of satiety: a dose-rising randomised control trial of whey protein in overweight women. Study aiming to identify biomarkers of appetite response.  Glycine, both alone and within a multivariate model, can estimate appetite response to both water and whey protein beverage consumption; however, a large proportion of variance in appetite response remains unexplained. Most biomarkers, when assessed in isolation, are poor predictors of appetite response, and likely of utility only in combination with Visual Analogue Scales and energy intake.

Study investigating differences in intrapancreatic fat deposition between the head, body, and tail of the pancreas, as well as the relationship between regional intrapancreatic fat deposition and diabetes status and insulin traits.  The association of increased intrapancreatic fat deposition in the tail and body regions with increased insulin resistance may have an important role in the early identification of patients at risk for developing insulin resistance and diseases that stem from it.

2022 Wu ZE, Kruger MC, Cooper GJ, Sequeira IR, McGill AT, Poppitt SD, Fraser K. Dissecting the relationship between plasma vs. tissue metabolome in a cohort of women with obesity: analysis of subcutaneous and visceral adipose, muscle and liver. Study attempting to increase understanding of relevance of blood metabolite markers with respect to relevant tissues.  To explore this field, metabolomic and lipidomic profiles of plasma, four sites of adipose tissues (ATs) from peripheral or central depot, two sites of muscle tissue, and liver tissue from a group of nondiabetic women with obesity who were scheduled to undergo bariatric surgery or other upper GI surgery, were measured by liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry.  Findings highlight the importance of taking into consideration the metabolomic relationship of tissues with plasma when conducting research.

Randomised cross-over trial assessing post-prandial response of higher-protein nut-based snack formulation when compared with an iso-energetic higher-carbohydrate cereal-based bar.  The nut bar induced a significantly lower glucose response.  A nut-based snack product may be a healthier alternative to an energy equivalent cereal-based product with evidence of both a lower postprandial glycaemic response and modulation of carbohydrate-induced hyperglycaemia, even in high-risk, overweight, pre-diabetic adults.

2021 Sequeira IR, Woodhead JS, Chan A, D’Souza RF, Wan J, Hollingsworth KG, Plank LD, Cohen P, Poppitt SD, and Merry T. Plasma mitochondrial derived peptides MOTS-c and SHLP2 positively associate with android and liver fat in people without diabetes. Study assessed the association between circulating MOTS-c and SHLP2 and components of metabolic syndrome (MS), as well as depot-specific fat mass in participants without overt type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular disease, to understand how metabolic stress regulates MDPs in humans.  The findings provide evidence that in the absence of overt type 2 diabetes, components of the MS positively associated with levels of MOTS-c and SHLP2 and that android fat, in particular liver fat, is a primary driver of these associations.

2020 Sequeira IR, Yip W, Lu LW, Jiang Y, Murphy R, Plank LD, Zhang S, Liu H, Chuang CL, Vazhoor-Amarsingh G, Cooper GJS, Poppitt SD. Visceral adiposity and key glucoregulatory peptides are associated with susceptibility to type 2 diabetes in an urban Chinese and Caucasian cohort: the TOFI-Asia Study. Study investigating adipose depots and clinical biomarkers as predictors of fasting plasma glucose and insulin resistance in lean and overweight normo- and dysglycemic Chinese and Caucasian individuals.  Visceral adipose tissue contributed to dysglycemia in both ethnicities, particularly in Chinese individuals characterised by the TOFI phenotype, as did glucoregulatory peptides amylin and C-peptide, providing targets for type 2 diabetes prevention.
